Ownership interest income, therefore, is generated from these copyright licenses and is a major source of company revenue:-

I. Mechanical Rights - Given by the songwriter to the record company by allowing that the company to release a "mechanical reproduction" of the song. There is a statutory rate of payment applied that may be split with the record company on a 50/50 basis.

II. Synchronization Rights - This represents the right to synchronize a musical composition with a specific visual image or series of visual images. In other words, these rights apply to movie soundtracks and film scores, video, computer games and other software applications.

 
 

III. Performance Rights - The right to perform a musical composition publicly for profit. There are two types:

- Dramatic (musical comedies, plays)

- Non-dramatic (radio, TV, stadiums, arenas, clubs, restaurants, bars, jukebox play and airplanes).

Publishers and writers license the non-dramatic performing rights in their songs to the various performing rights societies (ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC), which in turn license, their entire catalogs to the users. This may also be split with the company.

IV. Print and other Rights - the right to print and sell sheet music of a composition.

  The other rights include:-

- The right to use the song in a commercial

- Printing lyrics on tee shirts and posters

- Rights to derivative works (such as a film or play based on a composition)
